Brief Description of Course: An historical and critical introduction to literature written for or appropriated by children. Through these works we’ll examine changing notions of the child and the child reader; discern ways in which class, gender, ideology and historical context are embedded in literary texts for children; and query whether and how the ‘hidden adult’ is at work.
Required Reading: Final reading list is TBA. Texts may include The Princess and the Goblin; The Story of the Amulet; Tom’s Midnight Garden; Charlotte’s Web; King of Shadows; The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian.
