Brief Description of Course: An introduction to poetry, with particular emphasis on formal and technical elements, and on the development of interpretive skills.

Required Reading: Stephen Adams, Poetic Designs (Broadview); The Norton Anthology of Poetry, 5th ed. (Norton); Shakespeare, Sonnets (Signet); Paul Muldoon, Hay (FSG); Course Reader

Method of Instruction: Lectures on Monday, Tutorials on Wednesday. ALL STUDENTS MUST REGISTER THROUGH ROSI IN A TUTORIAL FOR ENG201Y L0101

First Three Authors/Texts: Anon., Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens (in Norton Anthology and Course Reader)

Method of Evaluation: Two Preliminary Exercises 5% (2½ each); four Very Short Essays 15% (5% each—only the best three scores will count); first Term Test 20%; term Paper 25%; final Exam 25%; tutorial Participation 10%
