Medieval Literature

Brief Description of Course: This course examines selected works of medieval English literature (excluding those of Chaucer), with attention to learning to read and translate Middle English. Students will also develop an appreciation of the formal structures, themes, and artistry of these texts.

Required Reading: Selection of verse and prose pieces, among which Middle English lyrics, Sir Orfeo, Malory Morte Darthur.

First Three Authors/Texts: Middle English lyrics, "Sir Orfeo", Gower.

Method of Instruction: Lecture/discussion and on-line assignments.

Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, essays, exam.
