Carr Hall 315, 100 St. Joseph St.
Brief Description of Course:
This section of English 428F will deal primarily with a selection of Davies’ novels, with some attention to his plays (Eros at Breakfast; Fortune, My Foe; and Question Time) and literary criticism. We will consider the first two trilogies in their entirety, and look at some later work. Students are strongly encouraged to have read Judith Skelton Grant’s biography, Robertson Davies: Man of Myth (1994), and Davies’ autobiographical novel, Murther & Walking Spirits (1991), before classes begin.
The texts will be ordered at the Bob Miller Book Room, 180 Bloor Street West, and will be studied in the following order, all (except the plays) in Penguin editions:
Eros at Breakfast & Fortune, My Foe
(Simon & Pierre);
Tempest-tost; Leaven of Malice; A Mixture of Frailties; Fifth Business; The Manticore; World of Wonders; The Rebel Angels.
Method of Evaluation:
Informal lecture-discussions with active class participation and student seminar presentations; one book report (10%); one major research paper (35%); one seminar presentation (15%); final test (20%); class participation (20%).
