Advanced Studies Group 5: The 20th Century in Extremis

Brief Description of Course: The twentieth century experienced two world wars, countless horrors, escalating arms races, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and several other events that challenged the ideological, philosophical, religious, and aesthetic beliefs of many individuals. This course will study poetry, prose and drama of the twentieth century that illustrate conditions of extreme, apocalyptic, fearful, or catastrophic conditions.

Required Reading: Required Reading: Texts studied will include Pat Barker, The Ghost Road; Don DeLillo, White Noise; Toni Morrison, Jazz; Allen Ginsberg, selected poems; Cynthia Ozick, The Messiah of Stockholm; Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart; Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms.

First Three Authors/Texts: Ozick, Ginsberg, DeLillo.

Method of Evaluation: Term paper; presentations; participation; other written work (no tests or exam).
