The JHI Working Group "Planetary Resistance: Climate Change and Computation" welcomes Patrick Jagoda, Associate Professor of English and Cinema & Media Studies at the University of Chicago, who will give a public lecture this week:
"TERRARIUM: An Alternate Reality Game about Climate Change "
This lecture will be based on Patrick Jagoda's work producing an ARG (alternate reality game) for the University of Chicago's freshman orientation. This year, the University of Chicago's orientation-ARG took on the topic of climate change. Prof. Jagoda, originator of this program at the University of Chicago, will discuss in this talk the thinking that went into the design of the game, along with perspectives on the uses of ARGs for preparing students for their participation in campus life and student well-being. In addition to his work at the University of Chicago, Patrick Jagoda is faculty director of the Weston Game Lab and co-founder of both the Game Changer Chicago Design Lab and the Transmedia Story Lab. Jagoda is the author of the forthcoming book Experiment Games (U. Chicago 2020) as well as Network Aesthetics (U. Chicago, 2016) and co-author of The Game Worlds of Jason Rohrer (MIT Press, 2016). He has co-directed several transmedia game projects, including Speculation (2012), the parasite (2017), and Terrarium (2019).
