Dear Graduate Students,
I am writing to announce that through a generous gift from Mrs Carroll Bishop, we will be able to offer on an annual basis The Richard and Florence Atwater Graduate Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student whose dissertation addresses Children’s Literature, in some degree.
Mrs. Carroll Bishop received her MA in the Department of English in the early 1990s. She is the daughter of Richard Tupper Atwater (1892-1948) who was a Chicago journalist and the author of a number of children’s stories. His book, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, was recently produced as a film and was written after he watched a documentary on Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic expedition.
This scholarship is much appreciated, and will allow us to assist graduate students who want to study children’s literature in greater depth.
