1st Year Seminar: The Coming Out Novel

Brief Description of Course:
In this seminar, we'll discuss narratives of sexual minority identity and self-disclosure from literary, historical, sociological, and political perspectives. What are the typical characteristics of the coming out novel? How has the genre changed over the last fifty years? How has its function as a political tool shifted? The course will invite you to commit to the project of building a meaningful intellectual community over the course of the term and to take responsibility not only for your own but for others' learning experience.

Required Reading: James Baldwin, Giovanni's Room; Alison Bechdel, Fun Home; Marc-Michel Bouchard, Lilies; Rita Mae Brown, Rubyfruit Jungle; Peter McGehee, Boys Like Us; Jamie O'Neill, At Swim, Two Boys; one or two further texts TBA.

First Three Authors/Texts: Brown, McGehee and Bouchard.

Method of Evaluation: Seminar presentations, essays, weekly journalling exercises, facilitation of group discussion.
