Brief Description of Course: An introduction to poetry, with particular emphasis on formal and technical elements, and on the development of interpretive skills.

Required Reading: Stephen Adams, Poetic Designs (Broadview); The Norton Anthology of Poetry, 5th ed. (Norton); Shakespeare, Sonnets (Signet);Voigt, The Art of Syntax (Graywolf); Yeats, The Tower (Scribner); Muldoon, Horse Latitudes (FSG); course reader.

First Three Authors/Texts: Shakespeare (selected sonnets); Sidney (selections from Astrophil and Stella); Spenser (selections from Amoretti).

Method of Evaluation: Several quizzes; several short assignments; mid-term test; exam; tutorial participation; web participation.
