Advanced Studies Group 3: American & Transnational Children's Literature

Brief Description of Course: This course will delve into bodies of work by formative American and Transnational children’s writers, partly through making use of Susan Cooper’s manuscripts and related materials at the Osborne Collection, as well as the Osborne’s Sendak-related holdings.

Required Reading: Maurice Sendak, Outside Over There; In the Night Kitchen; Where the Wild Things Are and others; Susan Cooper, The Dark is Rising series; King of Shadows; Victory; Louise Fitzhugh, Harriet the Spy; The Long Secret; other authors/texts TBA.

First Three Authors/Texts: Sendak, Cooper, Fitzhugh.

Method of Evaluation: Biweekly response papers (two pages each); research essay; class discussion.
