Brief Description of Course: An introduction to poetry, with particular emphasis on formal and technical elements, and on the development of interpretive skills.

Required Reading: Stephen Adams, Poetic Designs (Broadview); The Norton Anthology of Poetry, 5th ed. (Norton); Shakespeare, Sonnets (Signet); Course Reader.

First Three Authors/Texts: Anon., Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens (in Norton Anthology and Course Reader).

Method of Instruction: Lectures on Monday, Tutorials on Wednesday. 
ALL STUDENTS MUST REGISTER THROUGH ROSI IN A TUTORIAL FOR ENG201Y L0101.

Method of Evaluation: Two preliminary exercises (5% or 2½ each), four very short essays (15% or 5% each—only the best three scores will count), first-term test (20%), term paper (25%), final exam (25%), tutorial participation (10%).
