The Novel

Brief Description of Course: This course offers an introduction to the novel with an emphasis on the thematic and formal capaciousness of the genre (that is, its rich variability of topics, shapes, and styles). Works will be from a range of historical and cultural traditions (and some times in translation).

Required Reading: Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe; Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey; Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse; Ian McEwan, Atonement; Colson Whitehead, Zone One; Zadie Smith On Beauty; J.M. Coetzee Diary of a Bad Year; Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov; Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons, Watchmen; Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood (subject to change).

First Three Authors/Texts: Defoe, Austen, McEwan.

Method of Evaluation: Three essays, short writing assignment, midyear test, final exam, and participation in tutorial.
