Brief Description of Course: A consideration of various approaches to literature and their application to various texts; among the approaches are formalism, structuralism, psychoanalysis, deconstruction, postmodernism, feminism, Marxism, and postcolonialism.

Require Reading: Modern Literary Theory, 4th edition, ed. Rice and Waugh (Arnold)Stories and articles posted on Blackboard.

First Three Authors/Texts: Shklovsky, “Art as Technique”; Brooks, “The Language of Paradox”; Hawthorne, “Young Goodman Brown”

Method of Evaluation: Two essays (75%), final test (25%).
