Brief Description of Course: Using a combination of in-class and take-home assignments, this course is designed to give students the tools to write clearly and communicate effectively in both the university environment and beyond. The course is oriented towards the production of one polished academic essay, which will incorporate secondary research. Lectures and in-class exercises will give students a solid grounding in the basics of English grammar, while assignments will give them experience writing in a number of genres. The course will give particular emphasis to the writing process, with a series of assignments designed to guide students from brainstorming, outlining, and structuring through composition, revision, proofreading, and the production of a polished final draft.
