Brief Description of Course: We will read the work of seven major poets who emerged in the second half of the 20th Century: Ashbery, Bishop, Ginsberg, O’Hara, Plath, Rich, Walcott. We will also discuss several poets whose work speaks of contemporary reality in classical and current ways, from established figures such as Dionne Brand and Anne Carson, to a number of poets under forty whose work recommends itself to discerning readers.

Method of Evaluation: Best 3 out of 4 Quizzes (1/3 of final grade); mid-term in-class close reading essay (1/3 of final grade); final in-class essay on a topic (1/3 of final grade).
