Introduction to British Literature
Professor Misha Teramura

Brief Description of Course: An introductory survey of the literature written in the British Isles from its beginnings to 1700. We will explore works of poetry, drama, and prose, giving special attention to historical context, the development of a national literary tradition, and changing conceptions of “literature.”

First Three Authors/Texts: Beowulf; Judith; Marie de France.

Method of Instruction: Lecture and tutorials.

Method of Evaluation: Short essays; reading quizzes; final exam; tutorial participation.
