Brief Description of Course: This course provides an introduction to British literature from the end of the seventeenth century to the present. We will explore representative works in poetry, prose, and drama from throughout this three-century span, focusing on how they reflect and contribute to the social, intellectual, cultural, and political transformations Britain experienced during these centuries. In particular, we will attend to how British literature represents the rise and fall of the British Empire and the cross-cultural encounters, mergers, and conflicts that accompanied that process.
