Critical Approach to Literature

Brief Description of Course: A consideration of various approaches to literature and their application to various texts; among the approaches are formalism, structuralism, psychoanalysis, deconstruction, postmodernism, feminism, Marxism, and postcolonialism.

Required Reading: Modern Literary Theory, 4th edition, ed. Rice and Waugh (Arnold) 

Various stories and articles to be downloaded

First Three Authors/Texts: Shklovsky, “Art as Technique”; Brooks “The Language of Paradox”; McGann “The Text, the Poem; and the Problem of Historical Method”

Method of Instruction: Lecture/Discussion

Method of Evaluation: Two essays (75%), Final Test (25%).
