Brief Description of Course: A practical and theoretical investigation of the creative and interpretive possibilities opened up by digital forms of literature. In addition to reading literary and theoretical texts (including novels, graphic novels, essays, and videogames) students will acquire basic hands-on skills in digital storytelling through use of the Twine platform (HTML, CSS, and programming). No previous programming/coding experience is expected or required.

Require Reading: Books: Marshall McLuhan, The Medium is the Massage (Gingko); Dash Shaw, BodyWorld (Pantheon); Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad (Anchor); Adam Hammond, Literature in the Digital Age (Cambridge). Videogames: Davey Wreden, The Stanley Parable (Galactic Café) and Beginner’s Guide (Everything Unlimited). Remaining course texts will be available online.

First Three Authors/Texts: Nicholas Carr (online), McLuhan, Dash Shaw.

Method of instruction: Lecture.

Method of Evaluation: Two short assignments (15% each); essay (30%); exam (25%); participation (15%).
