Brief Description of Course: A close study of Chaucer’s major works with attention to literary innovation, aesthetics, and ethics. This is a year-long course on Chaucer’s poetry and all primary texts will be read in Middle English.

Required Reading: Book of the DuchessHouse of Fame; Parliament of Fowls; Troilus and Criseyde, and Canterbury Tales.

First Three Authors/Texts: Book of the Duchess, House of Fame, Parliament of Fowls.

Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion

Method of Evaluation: Two in-class essays; term test; research paper; exam; class participation.
