Brief Description of Course: A selection of important works of medieval English literature, with significant attention to learning to read and translate Middle English.

Required Reading: Sir Orfeo, St. Erkenwald, York Crucifixion, Pearl, Malory’s Morte Darthur. Readings will be drawn from Burrow and Turville-Petre, A Book of Middle English, 3rd edition, with the additions of the TEAMS edition of Pearl and selections from the Oxford UP edition of Malory’s Morte Darthur.

First Three Authors/Texts: Sir Orfeo, St. Erkenwald, York Crucifixion.

Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion.

Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, two essays, examination, class participation.
