Brief Description of Course: A study of the major short stories, novels and poems by Herman Melville (1819-1891).

Required Reading: Typee, Moby Dick, The Piazza Tales, Billy Budd, Sailor, Battle Pieces.

First Three Authors/Texts: Typee, Moby Dick, Benito Cereno

Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion.

Method of Evaluation: Two to three short writing assignments.
