Reading Poetry

Brief Description of Course: An introduction to poetry, with particular emphasis on formal and technical elements, and on the development of interpretive skills.

Required Reading: Stephen Adams, Poetic Designs (Broadview); The Norton Anthology of Poetry, 6th ed. (Norton); Shakespeare, Sonnets (Signet); Course Reader

First Three Authors/Texts: Anon., Wyatt, Shakespeare.

Method of Instruction: Lectures on Tuesday, Tutorials on Thursday. ALL STUDENTS MUST REGISTER THROUGH ACORN IN A TUTORIAL FOR ENG201Y L0101.

Method of Evaluation: Six Scansion exercises 5% (1% each—only the best five scores will count), four very short essays 15% (5% each—only the best three scores will count), first term test 20%, term paper 25%, final exam 25%; tutorial participation 10%.
