Michael Cobb

Michael Cobb teaches courses in American literature, modernism, queer literature, queer theory, literary theory, and critical race theory. In addition to his primary appointment in the Department of English, he is also cross-appointed to University College, the Centre for the Study of Religion, the Drama Centre, and the Women and Gender Studies Institute.

He's also an affiliated faculty member at the Centre for the Study of the United States and the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies. Michael was awarded the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts and Science Outstanding Teaching Award in 2009.

Publications

He has or will soon have published in journals such as: PMLA, boundary 2, Social Text, GLQ, Criticism, Callaloo, Western Humanities Review, and South Atlantic Quarterly. He is the author of God Hates Fags: The Rhetorics of Religious Violence (New York: New York University Press, 2006), which was named a Choice Outstanding Academic Title, and Racial Blasphemies: Race and Religious Irreverance in American Literature (New York: Routledge, 2005). His next book, Single: Arguments for the Uncoupled, will also appear soon from New York University Press. He is actively researching two other books, Pioneer Sex: Sexuality's Desolate Frontiers, Past and Present, which has been generously supported by a Standard Research Grant from the Social Science Humanities Research Council, and On Charm: The Fashion, Astrology, Fascism, Art, and Dance of a Spell.
