Brief Description of Course

In this course, we’ll examine Shakespearean works that take Rome as their backdrop. Through close readings, historical contextualization and the relationship of these works with their sources, this course will consider, among other things, the social and political values depicted in these settings and what they may have signified to Shakespeare’s contemporary English audiences. As well, we’ll be taking a look at how Shakespeare explores political issues, such as populism, that still resonate in Canada and around the world in 2022.
