Course Description

This course has to negotiate two competing demands: that it offer an introduction to some influential “critical approaches”; and that it explain why anyone would care about approaching literature in today. There is no definitive solution to this dilemma. Our provisional response will be: use the first chapter of Jacques Rancière’s Aisthesis as offering some helpful reasons why you might approach literature critically today; and read as a survey of the field some critics and philosophers Rancière relies on. Readings will probably include Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Brooks, Arnold, Du Bois, Adorno, Benjamin, Barthes, Foucault, Said, Sedgwick, Auerbach.
