Brief Description of Course
Representative works from writers living during an extraordinary period in history. Attention will be given to the close reading of these works, with special attention to literary, philosophical, social, and ecological contexts.
Required Reading(s)
Selected poetry from The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry (Broadview Press); Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (Broadview Press); Mary Shelley, Frankenstein (Broadview Press). I have provided additional readings in the course anthology in the "Files" section of the course's Quercus page.

Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Mary Wollstonecraft, Phillis Wheatley.
Method of Evaluation
- Three papers—approx. 7 pp. (2100 words) (15%); approx. 7 pp. (2100 words) (15%); and 8-10 pp. (2500-3000 words) (20%)
- Test (20%)
- Final examination (25%)
- Participation grade (5%)
