April 29, 2025 by The Department of English

The Department of English is pleased to announce that Professor Adam Hammond has been named a winner of the A&S Outstanding Teaching Award for 2024–25. This award recognizes excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, with a focus on classroom instruction, course design, and curriculum development.

“Professor Hammond's deep commitment to teaching and to classroom innovation are an inspiration to his students and colleagues alike,” says Acting Chair Robert McGill. “We've especially appreciated his work in ENG140Y: Literature for Our Time, a flagship first-year course that students have described to me as transformative in sparking their excitement about literary studies.”

Reflecting on the award, Professor Hammond shares: “Teaching means more to me than just about anything, so it’s a huge honour to be recognized in this way. My goal as a teacher is to create situations in which students can safely take the reins and express themselves critically and creatively within a community of supportive peers. It's been the thrill of a lifetime to meet such incredible students at the University of Toronto and see all that they’re capable of!”

Congratulations to Professor Hammond on this well-deserved recognition.
